Canada is ready to defend Greenland — Carney
Canada has reiterated its support for NATO’s principle of collective defense amid aggressive statements by Donald Trump regarding Greenland.
According to Ukrinform, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated this during his visit to Beijing.
Carney said that the future of Greenland should be decided by Greenland and Denmark. He stressed that Canada is a NATO ally of Denmark, adding that their partnership is unwavering and that Canada fully supports Articles 2 and 5 of the NATO Treaty.
He emphasized that Canada respects its obligations within NATO and expects the same from other NATO members.
Carney also added that he had discussed the sovereignty of the Greenlandic and Danish people with Chinese President Xi Jinping and that they found a significant similarity of views on this issue.
As Ukrinform previously reported, next month Canada will open a consulate in Greenland and send a high-level delegation to the island led by the governor general.
