Court keeps Shufrych in custody, bail set at UAH 33M

On January 13, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv ruled to extend the detention of Nestor Shufrych, an MP from the banned Opposition Platform – For Life party, until March 13, 2026, with the option of posting bail of more than UAH 33 million.

That is according to Suspilne, Ukrinform reports.

The court rejected the defense team's motion. Shufrych's lawyers had asked to change the preventive measure from detention to any non-custodial measure and submitted medical documentation from a clinic ready to admit him for rehabilitation after surgery.

Shufrych said his detention is "illegal." His lawyers stated they would appeal the ruling and seek to reduce the bail amount.

Shufrych's former aide, Viacheslav Cherepania, was also left in custody.

The Prosecutor General's Office recalled on Facebook that prosecutors sent the indictment to court in September 2024, and the trial is ongoing.

Shufrych and his ex-aide are accused of financing actions aimed at violently overthrowing the constitutional order and seizing state power (Part 3, Article 110-2 of Ukraine's Criminal Code). Additionally, Shufrych is charged with high treason (Part 1, Article 111).

According to investigators, after Russia's occupation of Crimea, the accused arranged the re-registration of property under Russian law, signed a security contract with an illegal paramilitary group, and transferred funds to Russia's National Guard.

Investigators also believe that Shufrych acted in coordination with a former senior official of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council who fled to Moscow after 2014 and now works for Russia. Shufrych spread pro-Russian narratives in public statements and interviews, engaging in subversive activities against Ukraine.

On November 19, 2025, the court extended Shufrych's custody until January 17, 2026, without bail. His former aide had house arrest extended until January 19, 2026.

The Security Service of Ukraine, together with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor General's Office, gathered evidence of Shufrych's anti-Ukrainian activities, based on which he was charged with treason.

According to media reports, on January 6, the Kyiv Court of Appeal changed Shufrych's custody terms, allowing release on bail of UAH 33,280,000.
