Trump's invasion of Greenland would mean end of NATO — Danish PM

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that if US President Donald Trump were to invade Greenland, it would mean the end of NATO.

This was reported by POLITICO, according to Ukrinform.

Trump, who last week stepped up threats to seize Danish territory in the Arctic, should be taken “seriously when he says that he wants Greenland,” Frederiksen said in an interview with TV2.

“But I will also make it clear that if the U.S. chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops, including NATO and thus the security that has been established since the end of the Second World War,” Frederiksen added.

Trump has long insisted that the mineral-rich island, which is largely autonomous but part of Denmark and therefore part of the NATO military alliance, should join the US, calling it a strategic necessity and refusing to rule out the use of force or economic coercion.

“We will deal with Greenland in about two months. Let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days,” Trump told reporters on Sunday aboard Air Force One, without giving any further details about what would happen then.

Trump's latest remarks came after the US launched strikes on Venezuela and arrested its leader, Nicolás Maduro. The raid sparked fears in Europe that Washington might attempt to annex Greenland, and leaders in Northern Europe and the UK pledged their support, according to the publication.

As reported by Ukrinform, European Commission Lead Spokesperson Anitta Hipper said that decisions on any changes to Greenland's status should be made only by the Danes and Greenlanders.
