US prepares new sanctions on Russia if Putin rejects peace deal – Bloomberg
The US Treasury is preparing a new package of sanctions targeting Russia's energy sector to increase pressure on Moscow if Russian leader Vladimir Putin rejects a peace agreement with Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform, Bloomberg reported this citing informed sources.
The sources said the US is considering measures such as sanctions on vessels of Russia's "shadow fleet" of tankers used to transport Moscow's oil, as well as sanctions on the traders facilitating these transactions.
They added that these new restrictive measures could be announced as early as this week.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed these plans during a meeting with a group of European ambassadors earlier this week.
"President Trump is the President of Peace, and I reiterated that under his leadership, America will continue to prioritize ending the war in Ukraine," he wrote on X after the meeting.
At the same time, sources warned that any final decision rests with US President Donald Trump.
The US Treasury has not yet commented on the report.
As Ukrinform reported, G7 countries and the European Union are negotiating to replace the price cap on Russian oil with a full ban on maritime services related to its export.
