Zelensky hopes Trump can help Ukraine unblock path to EU
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he hopes the United States will help Ukraine unblock its path to EU membership through its influence on certain countries.
According to an Ukrinform correspondent, Zelensky stated this during a press conference.
Zelensky said that the United States could take steps to unblock Ukraine's path to the European Union, which is currently being obstructed by some states. He noted that the U.S. president has certain levers of influence and that these levers could work on those who are blocking Ukraine.
He explained that this would become possible once the framework peace agreement currently being drafted contains a provision on Ukraine's EU membership.
Zelensky said that if an agreement is reached specifying when Ukraine becomes an EU member, then the United States, as a party to that agreement, would do everything to ensure that Ukraine's European prospects are not blocked by others in Europe over whom Washington has influence.
At the same time, he added that the U.S. position on Ukraine's NATO membership had not changed.
Zelensky stated that the United States does not want to see Ukraine in NATO and that U.S. officials speak about this openly. He said this was not speculation, since the current and previous U.S. administrations had not given Ukraine an invitation to join NATO, nor any concrete commitments, and that this position remains unchanged. He described it as a consistent stance of the United States.
As reported earlier, President Zelensky said that the U.S. team is actively working on finding ways to end the war, but that for Ukraine the principles of a future peace are decisive.
