"Let's never forget what this war means for the people here! Despite all the hardships that the war also brings for us in Germany - let's look through the eyes of the Ukrainians for a moment. [...] Then we know that they need our full solidarity and support - as long as it is necessary," he said.

According to Steinmeier, it is also a matter of repairing destroyed infrastructure as quickly as possible, of repairing power grids, water pipes, heating systems, of eliminating supply bottlenecks.

During his visit to Kyiv, the German president plans to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, and assure him of Germany's support.

In particular, both leaders will call on municipalities and cities in Germany to establish short-term partnerships.

Steinmeier visited Kyiv for the first time since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
