EU preparing new sanctions against Russia over sham ‘referenda’ in Ukraine

The European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions to react to Russia’s acts of crime, such as organizing sham ‘referenda’ within the temporarily occupied areas, committing atrocities against civilians in Ukraine, as well as a partial mobilization, which has been announced by Putin today.

The relevant statement was made by EU Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Peter Stano at a briefing in Brussels, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to Stano, the Member States have already held a coordination meeting and discussed the ways of reacting to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, including all aspects of the Russian aggression: sham ‘referenda’, the crimes committed, the mass burial sites discovered, such as that in Izium.

Stano noted all these elements had been discussed between the Member States. At this stage, such discussion is confidential, and information about their decision will be released when the time comes.
