Ukrainian president, Spanish FM discuss security situation, European integration of Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has discussed the security situation with Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Jose Manuel Albares Bueno and emphasized the importance of each EU country supporting Ukraine's defense capabilities.

That's according to the presidential press service, Ukrinform reports.

According to the report, the head of state drew special attention to the security situation around Ukraine and briefed the Spanish foreign minister on Ukraine's initiatives to intensify the negotiation process within the Normandy format.

Zelensky noted the importance of support from European partners for the country's course for de-escalation and achieving peace. He also stressed the importance and urgency of strengthening defensive support for Ukraine.

"It is important that the EU, each of its member states, support us today in strengthening the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian army," Zelensky said.

He noted Spain's solidarity in supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At the same time, Zelensky emphasized the urgency of further active and effective progress of the country on the path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

"I count on Spain's support for the prospects of our membership in the European Union," he said.

According to the President's Office, during the meeting the head of state said that Albares' visit takes place on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Zelensky also invited the Spanish prime minister to visit Kyiv this year.

Albares is visiting Ukraine for the first time.
