Kuleba: No Central European country has succeeded without EU membership prospects

Since 1989, no Central European country has succeeded without a very clear prospect and promise of EU membership at the end of its transformation path.

“Our key expectation from the European Union is to give Ukraine a European prospect. This decision requires only the political will of the EU, without an institutional commitment, but it will play a very important role,” Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba said speaking at the 4th Association Exchange Forum in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“First, the membership prospect will undoubtedly be a very motivating transformational force for Ukraine. I would like to remind you that no Central European country since 1989 has succeeded without a very clear prospect and promise of EU membership at the end of its transformation path,” he said.

According to the minister, a granted prospect will instill confidence in our part of Europe which shares European values and considers itself part of the European family. He also called on the EU to act actively and ambitiously to prevent other forces from coming to this land.

“Third, it will put an end to the Kremlin's senseless attempts to radically change Ukraine's European choice and to convince Ukrainians that the EU does not need them. This is one of the most common Russian narratives in Ukraine, and we must work together to keep people's faith in the achievability of European goal,” Kuleba said.

As reported, on September 11, Kuleba called on the European Union not to keep Ukraine "on the hook of reforms" but to sincerely express its own strategic vision regarding the European prospects of our country.
