Shmyhal calls land reform important and long-awaited in Ukraine’s history

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has called a land reform one of the most important and long-awaited reforms in the history of independent Ukraine.

He said this at a regular government meeting on June 30, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"One of the most important and long-awaited reforms in the entire history of independent Ukraine will start tomorrow. Ukrainians will become the real owners of their land, because they will be able not only to own it, but also to use it freely. This is enshrined in the Constitution, but in fact it was impossible due to the moratorium," Shmyhal said.

According to him, there is not a single successful country with a moratorium on the introduction of a civilized land market. "From tomorrow it will not be in Ukraine as well. We are grateful to President Volodymyr Zelensky for his political will on this issue, since his programs started this important path for our country,” the prime minister added.

As reported, on March 31, 2020, the Verkhovna Rada passed the Law "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Concerning the Circulation of Agricultural Land." On April 28, it was signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The document lifts the moratorium on the sale of agricultural land, except for state-owned land, from July 1, 2021. Citizens of Ukraine, territorial communities, and the state may acquire the right of ownership of agricultural land plots.
