FM Kuleba: Nord Stream 2 poses not only economic threats

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba pointed out the need to make every effort to prevent the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project during a meeting with the delegation of U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Rob Portman, and Chris Murphy in Kyiv on June 2.

As the Ministry’s press service informs, Kuleba paid special attention to the security challenges posed by the Russian geopolitical project Nord Stream 2 and stressed the need for making every effort to prevent its implementation.

“It is a bad project for Ukraine, for Europe, and for the United States. It poses not only economic but also security and political threats to our country. By implementing this project, Russia seeks to discredit the West in the eyes of Ukrainians and outside our country. It is in our common interest to thwart these plans,” he said.

In particular, during the talks, the foreign minister praised the personal contribution of senators to strengthening long-standing bipartisan and bicameral support for Ukraine in the Congress and expressed gratitude for initiating legislation that strengthens Ukraine’s defense capabilities and promotes important reforms.

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire (Democratic Party) assured that the Congress was ready to continue supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression and in pursuing democratic transformations that strengthen the stability of Ukraine, and its further Euro-Atlantic integration.

Kuleba also underscored that it was important for NATO to grant Ukraine clear Euro-Atlantic integration prospects, given the security challenges in the region.

The minister informed his interlocutors about the security situation around the borders of Ukraine and in the temporarily occupied territories of our country and assured of the Ukrainian authorities’ commitment to ensuring the independence of anti-corruption bodies, strengthening the rule of law, and continuing important reforms.

The parties paid special attention to strengthening US-Ukraine political and security cooperation and enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities of our state.
