EU to strengthen Ukraine's resilience to Russia's strategic challenge – Šefčovič

The European Union will remain united in the face of the global challenge posed by the Russian Federation, and strengthen the resilience of Ukraine and other eastern partners.

Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič said this at a press conference following the General Affairs Council on May 11, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“On Russia, I underline the importance to maintain our unity vis-a-vis this strategic challenge. We need to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine and other eastern partners, and to invest in Russian civil society and people-to-people contacts,” he said.

Earlier, the Foreign Affairs Council noted a negative trend in the behavior of Russia, which took an open course towards escalating relations with the EU.

EU Ministers of General Affairs met in Brussels on May 11. They considered the practical issues of preparing the agenda for the upcoming meeting of EU leaders, which is scheduled for May 24-25. According to EU High Representative Josep Borrell, the Council will discuss a strategy for the development of relations between the EU and Russia on May 25.
