Foreign Ministry confirms detention of Ukrainian consul in Russia

The detention of a consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg by Russian law enforcement officers for several hours was another provocation against the background of Russia’s destabilizing actions.

As Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko said in a commentary to Ukrinform, Russian law enforcement officers detained the consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine in St. Petersburg for several hours.

“Currently, he is in the Ukrainian diplomatic mission. The circumstances of the detention are being clarified. In the near future, the Ukrainian side will decide on the form of response to this provocation, taking into account the existing practice,” Nikolenko said.

On Saturday, April 17, Russia’s FSB reported that Oleksandr Sosoniuk, the consul of the Consulate General of Ukraine, was detained in St. Petersburg on April 16 for allegedly receiving confidential information from databases of law enforcement agencies and FSB.
