Biden says he opposed to Nord Stream 2 from beginning

U.S. President Joe Biden says he has been opposed to the construction of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from the beginning, but this is a complicated issue affecting U.S. allies in Europe.

The president said this during a press briefing at the White House on Thursday, April 15, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Nord Stream 2 is a complicated issue affecting our allies in Europe. I’ve been opposed to Nord Stream 2 for a long time, from the beginning, when I was even – when I was out of office and even before office, when we – before I left office as Vice President,” Biden said.

He stressed that Nord Stream 2 is still an issue that is in play.

As Ukrinform reported, the Biden administration is under serious pressure from the U.S. Congress on the need to block the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline running from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Although the White House calls the project a "bad deal" for Europe, they note that they also strive to take into account the interests of allies in Europe, in particular Germany.
