Human rights violations in occupied Crimea to be raised at UN Council ministerial discussion

As part of a high-level segment of the United Nations Human Rights Council, a ministerial discussion entitled "International Response to Human Rights Violations in Temporarily Occupied Crimea, Ukraine" will take place on February 23.

According to the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the main topic of the event will be the presentation of the Crimean Platform.

It is noted that the event was co-organized by Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Turkey.

"The foreign ministers of Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, a representative of the U.S. Department of State, the deputy foreign ministers of Turkey and Georgia, and representatives of a number of other UN member states will take part in the discussion of the human rights situation in the temporarily occupied Crimea," the report reads.

On January 14, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) declared sufficient grounds to accept Ukraine's complaints against Russia on eleven counts in an interstate case of human rights violations in Crimea.

Russia's planned armed aggression against Ukraine began on February 20, 2014 with a military operation by the Russian Armed Forces to seize part of Ukraine's territory - the Crimean peninsula. Subsequently, Russian regular troops and Russian-led militants occupied certain districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.
