Deputy FM: UN reports on human rights situation in occupied Crimea and Donbas should be impartial

The human rights situation in Ukraine, especially in its temporarily occupied territories, should be fully and impartially reflected in the reports of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

“First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzheppar and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet discussed topical issues of cooperation between the Government of Ukraine and OHCHR, in particular in the context of work of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine,” the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine informs.

Emine Dzheppar underscored the need for the OHCHR reports to reflect the full and impartial human rights situation in Ukraine, especially in its temporarily occupied territories, and to regularly inform the international community about the situation as such activity is an important tool for preventing new crimes by the Russian occupation administration.

The UN High Commissioner was informed in detail about new facts of numerous gross violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by Russia in the temporarily occupied territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city Sevastopol, as well as in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Particular attention was paid to Ukrainian citizens illegally imprisoned by Russia and the steps that can be taken by the Office of the High Commissioner together with other UN human rights mechanisms to alleviate their situation and release them.

The First Deputy Minister invited Commissioner Bachelet to visit Ukraine and get acquainted with the situation on the ground and with the activities of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission which has been working in the country since 2014 at the invitation of the Government.

The UN High Commissioner assured that the visit to Ukraine remained on her agenda and its timeframe would be determined as soon as the epidemic situation allowed.
