EU ambassador to Ukraine disturbed by fire in activist Shabunin's house

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Matti Maasikas has expressed concern over the fire in the house of Vitaliy Shabunin, the head of NGO Anti-Corruption Action Center.

He wrote this on his Twitter account.

"Very disturbed by the news that the house of the anti-corruption activist Vitaliy Shabunin burned down. I call on the authorities to investigate this case and if a deliberate act – to bring the perpetrators to justice," Maasikas said.

He stressed that civil activists must feel safe to carry on their mission.

Shabunin said on July 23 that unidentified individuals set fire to his house last night.

Investigators of the Boryspil police department, under the procedural control of the local prosecutor's office, launched criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 194 (deliberate destruction of or damage to property) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
