Adoption of Ukraine's sovereignty declaration an act of incredible unity – Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine is a sign of the incredible unity of politicians and recalled that no one had introduced thousands of amendments to the document at that time.

He stated this in his speech from the parliament's rostrum at a ceremonial meeting of the Verkhovna Rada during the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the declaration, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"The adoption of the declaration is an act of the incredible unity of politicians for the sake of the people's will and a great state goal," Zelensky said.

He said that the thousand-year-long history of Ukraine had known many documents which have become fundamental to the creation of the Ukrainian state, and, according to him, the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine is one of them.

Zelensky stressed that the declaration had brought the centuries-old struggle, towards the victory of Ukrainians in establishing a free and independent state, closer.

He recalled that on July 16, 1990, the Declaration of State Sovereignty was supported by 355 people's deputies from different parts of Ukraine, from different parties and with different views.

"Note that no one 'overwhelmed' the declaration, proposing eight thousand amendments. No one tried to block it with resolutions. No one tried to 'beat it down' through the Constitutional Court," Zelensky added.
