Zelensky submits motion to dismiss Smolii as NBU governor

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has tabled in the Verkhovna Rada a motion to dismiss Yakiv Smolii as governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), according to the website of the Ukrainian parliament.

A draft resolution on Smolii's dismissal as NBU governor was submitted for consideration by the parliament's leadership.

Smolii tendered his resignation due to "systematic political pressure" on July 1.

According to the law, the resignation of the NBU head must be approved by the Verkhovna Rada on the basis of a motion from the president.

The President's Office said the NBU Board would continue its activities in line with the principles of independence and professionalism.

Smolii was appointed NBU governor in March 2018.
