EU needs new policy on Ukraine with membership prospects - Karl von Habsburg

The European Union needs a new policy on Ukraine that would envisage membership prospects, President of the Paneuropean Movement in Austria Karl von Habsburg has said in an interview with Ukrinform.

"It [Ukraine] now belongs to the European Neighborhood Policy, which does not envisage the prospect of membership. That is why we in the Paneuropean Union clearly state that we need a new policy on Ukraine that would provide for the prospect of accession. The goal here is obvious, but the path it is still difficult," he said, commenting on whether the coronavirus crisis will have implications for Ukraine's European integration prospects.

According to him, the EU as a whole in the enlargement issue "has shown its capacity to act, albeit with some delay."

"Negotiations on accession should now begin with Albania and [North] Macedonia. That's good. Countries in Southeast Europe definitely belong to Europe," he said.
