Zelensky, Pompeo discuss fight against coronavirus, U.S. loan guarantees

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo have discussed the issue of counteracting the coronavirus and the possibility of Ukraine obtaining loan guarantees from the United States.

These issues were discussed during a phone call between the two officials, the press service of the Ukrainian president reported.

In particular, Zelensky expressed support for the United States in the fight against the pandemic and condolences to the Americans who have lost loved ones. The head of state wished the sick people a speedy recovery.

"The United States is now at the epicenter of fighting the pandemic. I share the pain of thousands of Americans who have lost loved ones. I am confident that the United States will pass these challenges successfully. I wish you good health," Zelensky said.

He also thanked the U.S. side for providing targeted assistance to Ukraine to fight coronavirus.

"I am grateful to the United States for providing targeted assistance, $1.2 million, to fight coronavirus," Zelensky said.

According to the Office of the President, the sides also discussed the possibility of Ukraine receiving loan guarantees from the United States needed to stabilize the economy - in addition to the resources that the country is planning to get from the IMF, the World Bank and other foreign partners.

Zelensky informed Pompeo about the situation in Donbas and the implementation of agreements reached after the Normandy format meeting last December.

The president expressed gratitude to the United States for its continued support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, both bilaterally and within the UN, as well as for its consistent policy of sanctions against Russia.
