Zelensky: $2.9 bln compensation from Gazprom is another victory of Ukraine

President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed Ukraine’s receipt of $2.9 billion in compensation from Russia’s Gazprom under a ruling of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

In a post on his Facebook page, Zelensky wrote: “Another victory. For someone, it may be a little one. But for the country it is a huge one. Naftogaz of Ukraine has received $2.9 billion in compensation from Gazprom under a ruling of the Stockholm arbitration court. The funds are already on the Ukrainian accounts - according to the reached agreements”.

As Ukrinform reported, Ukraine received $2.918 billion from Gazprom under a ruling of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.

On February 28, 2018, the Stockholm arbitration court issued a ruling in favor of Naftogaz in the dispute with Gazprom.

The Stockholm court found that Gazprom had defaulted on its obligations regarding volumes to be transited and awarded damages of $4.63 billion. According to the rulings, Gazprom had to make payments to Naftogaz in the order of $2.56 billion after residual payments for gas delivered in 2014 and 2015 had been settled.

Naftogaz received the first part of the compensation – $ 2.1 billion out of the awarded $4.63 billion – in the form of gas that had been supplied by Gazprom in 2014. Naftogaz reflected this part of the award in its financial statements for 2017 and paid relevant taxes and dividends to the state budget of Ukraine in 2018.
