Ukraine informs US of its interest in appointing new special representative

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has informed the U.S. side of its interest in appointing a new U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations following the resignation of Kurt Volker.

"I told an envoy of the U.S. Department of State that we are interested in having a person who would be able to lead the negotiating team from the US side," Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko said in an interview with UNIAN news agency.

He informed that various options were discussed.

"It could be an option of Victoria Nuland when she was the official representative of the Department of State and the Assistant Secretary of State for the region at the same time. This is convenient in the context that you are aware of what is happening in the region. You have people who work professionally, i.e. diplomats working in these areas. On the other hand, it’s what Kurt Volker was doing. He was relieved of his day-to-day responsibilities in all areas and was able to focus on the Normandy format process only. Both options are interested in their own way and they are important to us," the minister said.

According to him, Ukraine wishes this position was filled in any form as soon as possible.
