Security situation in Ukraine to be discussed at G7 summit in Biarritz

The G7 leaders at a summit in the French city of Biarritz will discuss the security situation in Ukraine, as well as the challenges to international politics with respect to some other countries and regions of the world.

Ukrinform learned this from European diplomatic circles.

The annual G7 summit will take place on August 24-26 in Biarritz, a city in south-west France. Beyond the final communiqué (which will probably focus on the fight against inequality), Brexit, trade and security issues will dominate the agenda for bilateral meetings between world leaders.

Possibly the only topic that world leaders will all agree on is that security issues represent a threat to Western countries. The G7 leaders will discuss, in particular, Ukraine, Syria and Libya.

The G7 summit will be an opportunity for the EU to defend the rules-based order and its organizations as the best approach for global governance.

As reported, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he wants Russia back at the Group of Seven summits of the world's leading economies, even though it still controls Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.

The Russian Federation was expelled from the old G8 format after it had annexed the Ukrainian Crimea in 2014 and all other members of the group – the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the USA – imposed sanctions against Moscow.
