Reform of Ukraine’s Security Service discussed at NSDC Office

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Danylyuk, Acting Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov, experts of the NSDC Office, and Deputy Head of Ukraine's Presidential Office Ruslan Riaboshapka met with representatives of the International Advisory Group (IAG).

According to the NSDC’s press service, the parties discussed topical security issues, in particular, the reform of the Security Service of Ukraine.

Members of the IAG, which includes representatives of the European Union, the EU Advisory Mission (EUAM), NATO and the United States Embassy in Ukraine, expressed their support for the Ukrainian authorities' stance on the need to urgently reform the Security Service of Ukraine, with due respect for the stage-by-stage approach to this process.

The NSDC secretary stressed that the working group was constantly developing draft laws that would regulate the reform process of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. "During the next meeting of the expert group, the concept of the SBU reform and related legislative developments will be discussed," he said.

Danylyuk also noted that the reform of the Security Service of Ukraine was a requirement of the Law of Ukraine "On National Security", with its main purpose being the strengthening of the key functions of the Security Service, in particular, counterintelligence.
