EU ambassadors discuss sanctions for Russia's ‘passportization’ of Donbas – journalist
EU ambassadors in Brussels are discussing actions in response to the issuance of Russian passports in Donbas, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty reporter Rikard Jozwiak has stated.
“Today, EU ambassadors are discussing Moscow's move to give Russian passports to people in eastern Ukraine,” he posted on Twitter on Wednesday.
According to Jozwiak, the work to ban those passport holders to enter the EU will take time, with Crimea it was around 18 months but it will happen.
As Ukrinform reported, on July 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin simplified the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for all Ukrainian citizens residing in the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and not only in the occupied areas of Donbas.
The Presidential Office of Ukraine condemned this step, saying that it created additional obstacles to de-escalation of the conflict and reintegration of Donbas.
