Vakarchuk's party proposes moratorium on changes to language law

The Holos (Voice) party led by Ukrainian singer Svyatoslav Vakarchuk intends to initiate the introduction of a five-year moratorium on amendments to the law on ensuring the functioning of Ukrainian as a state language, the party's press service has reported.

"Holos fully shares the clauses of this law and considers its duty to protect it," the report said.

The party also intends to initiate the introduction of amendments to all necessary laws so as to oblige all public servants, and especially Ukrainian MPs, to use the state language in their official activities. The party will also demand that the implementation of the language law be financed by a protected article in the state budget and that the government be obliged to provide "proper funding in each draft law on the state budget for each year within at least five years."

The law on ensuring the functioning of Ukrainian as a state language became effective on July 16, 2019.
