G7 Ambassadors release statement on presidential bill on lustration

The G7 Ambassadors to Ukraine consider that prosecution of those guilty or abusing their office is the right step, noting that the current situation in Ukraine is not comparable to that after the Revolution of Dignity.

“While it is right to hold those guilty or abusing their office to account, the situation in Ukraine today is, in our conviction, not comparable to that after the Revolution of Dignity,” reads the statement of the G7 Ambassadors to Ukraine published on Twitter.

The Ambassadors noted that they had been appreciative of reform progress achieved in some important areas since 2014.

“Electoral change and political rotation are the norm in democracies. Indiscriminate bans on all participants in executive and legislative governance are not,” the statement reads.

As reported, on July 11, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed extending the lustration law to the president of Ukraine, people's deputies, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, government members, the prosecutor general, the SBU head, the heads of the Antimonopoly Committee and the State Property Fund, the heads of the state fiscal and customs services, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, the heads of defense enterprises, who held their posts between February 23, 2014 and May 19, 2019.
