Ukrainian parliament refuses to cancel Electoral Code

The Verkhovna Rada has rejected draft resolution No. 3112-1-P to cancel a decision of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of July 11, 2019 on the adoption of the Electoral Code of Ukraine as a whole.

Only two MPs voted for the draft resolution at a parliament meeting on Friday, with at least 226 votes needed to pass a decision, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"The resolution has been rejected. This allows me to sign the code and submit it to the president for signature," Verkhovna Rada Chairman Andriy Parubiy said.

The authors of the draft resolution, MPs from the Vidrodzhennia Party Valeriy Pysarenko and Dmytro Sviatash, said that during the adoption of the Electoral Code the parliament violated a number of requirements of the Constitution of Ukraine and the rules of procedure of the Verkhovna Rada regarding the procedure for the adoption of laws by the parliament.

The Verkhovna Rada adopted the Electoral Code at second reading on July 11. A total of 230 MPs for the document.
