British Foreign Secretary congratulates Zelensky, thanks Poroshenko for reforms

Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom Jeremy Hunt congratulated Volodymyr Zelensky on victory in Ukraine’s presidential elections and thanked incumbent President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko for his efforts to find peace and drive reform.

The relevant statement was posted on the website of the Government of the United Kingdom.

“I would like to send my warmest congratulations to Volodymyr Zelenskiy on his election as the next President of Ukraine and express my gratitude to President Petro Poroshenko for his service to Ukraine and his efforts to find peace and drive reform,” Hunt said.

The British Secretary also praised the process of holding elections in Ukraine.

“I also congratulate Ukraine for holding peaceful and competitive presidential elections, which underline Ukraine’s continuing commitment to democracy and the Euro-Atlantic path that its people have chosen,” Hunt stated.

As he emphasized, the United Kingdom is interested in supporting Ukraine because its stability is essential for Europe’s security.

“The UK has a vital interest in supporting Ukraine. Not only does it stand on the front-line of Russia’s challenge to the rules-based international system, its stability is essential for Europe’s security,” the UK’s Foreign Secretary noted.

He added that London would continue to support Ukraine on the path of reforms.

“We look forward to working with President-elect Zelenskiy and to continuing the UK’s strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This includes our growing cooperation on defence and security, as well as our shared commitment to delivering the economic and political reforms which are vital to Ukraine’s resilience and future prosperity,” Hunt underscored.

The Secretary also reminded that the July Ukraine Reform Conference in Toronto would represent an excellent opportunity to assess progress and demonstrate commitment to these crucial efforts.

As reported, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine processed 100% of electronic protocols on the vote count in the second round in Ukraine's presidential elections. According to the results, Volodymyr Zelensky won the presidential elections as he garnered 73.22% of the vote. 24.45% of Ukrainians cast their votes for incumbent President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

A total of 18,491,840 Ukrainians took part in voting. The voter turnout was 62.07%.
