Trump reaffirms readiness to support reforms in Ukraine - White House

U.S. President Donald Trump has said in a phone conversation with the winner of the presidential election in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, that Washington is ready to further support reforms and the strengthening of democracy in Ukraine.

The White House published a respective statement after Trump's communication with Zelensky on Sunday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

President Donald Trump spoke today with President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky and congratulated him on his election victory in Ukraine on April 21, the statement reads.

Trump called the elections an important milestone in the history of Ukraine and noted that they had passed in a peaceful and democratic manner.

He also reaffirmed the United States' support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, the White House said. In addition, the U.S. president expressed his readiness to work with the president-elect and the Ukrainian people in the area of implementing the reforms needed to strengthen democracy, increase prosperity and eliminate corruption in the country.

With over 95% of ballots counted in Ukraine's presidential election, Zelensky wins 73.15% of the vote, whereas the incumbent head of state, Petro Poroshenko, gets 24.52% of the vote.

The voter turnout was 62.09%.
