Russia not interested in resolving Transnistrian conflict — ambassador

Ukraine’s Special Representative for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, Ambassador Viktor Kryzhanivsky considers that the Russian Federation is interested in maintaining the status quo of the Transnistrian conflict.

He stated this at the Kyiv Security Forum, Ukrinform's correspondent in the Republic of Moldova reported.

“There is no progress in the political settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. For Russia, it is important to maintain a focus of tension in the region,” the diplomat said.

According to the ambassador, Russia while maintaining this focus is hindering the normal development of the region.

He also stressed that Ukraine was doing everything possible to resolve the situation, including by creating joint control points with Moldova on the Transnistrian part of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border.

Moldova and Transnistria (parties to the conflict), Ukraine, the OSCE and Russia (mediators), the EU and the U.S. (observers) participate in the negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement process in the 5+2 format.
