Poroshenko gives Guterres letter calling for release of Kremlin's hostages

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during which he handed him a collective letter with the request to fight for the release of the Kremlin's hostages.

Some 25,000 Ukrainians signed the letter, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"We are asking for your highest consideration, your influence, for the sake of liberation of Ukrainian sailors who are currently held in Russia in violation of international law," Poroshenko said.

As reported, last year the Ukrainian delegation managed to include a separate item "The situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine" in the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly for 2019. The first special debate on this topic took place on February 20, 2019, on the fifth anniversary of the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Poroshenko is on a visit to the United States on February 20 to participate in a meeting of the UN General Assembly on agenda item 67 "The situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine."
