Poroshenko thanks Tusk for ‘Azov sanctions’ package against Russia

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko thanked President of the European Council Donald Tusk for a decision of the EU Council regarding the introduction of the “Azov package” of sanctions.

“This is exactly what we agreed with you in December. It is very pleased and extremely important that we keep what we agreed on five years ago - we need unity and solidarity with Ukraine from Europe,” Poroshenko said during a meeting with Tusk in Kyiv on Monday, the press service of the head of state reported.

"I am grateful for every decision when the European Union demonstrates unity and solidarity with Ukraine, as it was demonstrated today regarding the consensus decision on the "Azov package" of sanctions," he added.

The president stressed that the attack on Ukrainian ships was absolutely cynical.

"It was an open act of aggression against the Ukrainian Navy, an attempt to occupy the Kerch Strait and the Azov-Black Sea basin by the armed forces of the Russian Federation, the border troops of Russia. The goal of the Kremlin is not only an attempt to force Ukraine to return to the so-called zones of influence of Russia, but also to stop our movement towards Europe," the president said.
