Border guards to check international observers during elections – Tsyhykal

The State Border Guard Service will conduct preliminary checks of all international observers who will arrive in Ukraine for the presidential elections scheduled for March 31, 2019.

Head of the State Border Guard Service Petro Tsyhykal stated this during a staff meeting at the Interior Ministry.

“One of the main tasks of our service during the election of the President of Ukraine is to enhance control of international traffic channels. This is due to the arrival of a significant number of international observers,” he said.

He noted that Ukrainian border guards will register the international observers out of turn, on a priority basis.

“Each checkpoint will have the copies of the lists of registered international observers and organizations that the Central Election Commission will provide. The State Border Guard Service is ready to conduct preliminary checks of this category of persons using the departmental databases. Also, information will be recorded and transferred to the concerned bodies, and made public,” the head of the service said.

He also added that special attention would be paid to pro-Russian journalists.

As Ukrinform reported, over 850 international observers are expected to arrive in Ukraine to monitor the presidential elections.
