Poroshenko, Maurer coordinate steps for liberation of captured Ukrainian sailors

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer coordinated the steps for liberation of captured Ukrainian sailors.

 “President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer. The parties coordinated further steps in the liberation of Ukrainian seamen, who were captured by Russia as a result of another act of aggression on November 25 and have the status of prisoners of war in accordance with international humanitarian law,” the press service of the Head of State reports.

As noted, the President of Ukraine urged the ICRC President to take all possible measures to force Russia comply with the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian servicemen guaranteed by international law.

The Head of State also called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intensify efforts to release all Ukrainian hostages, including Oleg Sentsov, Roman Sushchenko and Volodymyr Balukh.

In the course of the meeting, Petro Poroshenko thanked the President of the ICRC for the efforts made by the Committee to overcome the humanitarian consequences of the ongoing Russian aggression. It was noted that the humanitarian operation in Ukraine remains a priority for the ICRC in the world.
