Pseudo-elections in occupied Donbas will trigger new sanctions against Russia - Poroshenko

Pseudo-elections in non-government-controlled areas in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, which were scheduled by pro-Russian militants for November 11, should launch the process of introducing new international sanctions against Russia.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said this at an international conference "The Hybrid War Decade. Lessons Learned to Move Forward Successfully" in Kyiv on Wednesday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"I expect that the so-called fake elections that Russia decided to hold on November 11 will launch new sanctions and show that the West's patience is also not unlimited. Now it's time to talk not about the easing of sanctions against Russia, but about their tightening," he said.

The president stressed that there can be no compromise on Russian aggression, especially in the matter of sanctions, until the territorial integrity of Ukraine is completely restored.

According to him, any hints at weakening the pressure "aggravate the aggressive appetites of the Kremlin," provoke Russia to ignore the peace process in Donbas, including by postponing the deployment of a full-scale UN peacekeeping mission, as well as new repressions in the occupied Crimea.
