Szijjártó comments on meeting with Klimkin: Positive steps and good compromise

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó handed over a draft agreement on the settlement of contradictions in bilateral relations to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin during a meeting in Warsaw.

"Today I have submitted a draft agreement to minister Klimkin as I believe that we should sign a new agreement between the two countries on the protection of minorities: on how we can better help our minority, better guarantee their rights and regard our community as a resource to improve bilateral relations, not as a source of conflict," Szijjártó said in a commentary to an Ukrinform correspondent.

He expressed the hope that all the contradictions between Kyiv and Budapest would be overcome and the relations would reach the level they had been before the adoption of Ukraine’s law on education in September 2017.

Szijjártó noted that Hungary had been one of the main supporters of Ukraine’s European integration aspirations, actively supported the abolition of the visa regime and enactment of the Association Agreement with the EU.

“We will be very happy if there is an opportunity to return to that situation, but it depends on the Ukrainian authorities,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister emphasized.

Szijjártó said he worked very actively with minister Klimkin to overcome mutual contradictions, and there are already "small positive steps" on this path.
