Poroshenko, German secretaries of state discuss release of political prisoners and sanctions on Russia

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met with the delegation of secretaries of state of the Federal Republic of Germany.

“The delegation members praised significant progress of Ukraine on the path of reforms and increase in Ukraine’s attractiveness for German companies. The parties noted the importance of upcoming visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Ukraine in terms of strengthening the bilateral partnership,” the press service of the Head of State reports.

Petro Poroshenko thanked the German side for the assistance provided to Ukraine in the implementation of reforms, as well as for the role of Germany and personally Chancellor Merkel in restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity.

The importance of extending the EU sanctions policy towards Russia as an aggressor state was emphasized during the meeting.

 “The Head of State underscored the buildup of Russia's military presence in the Sea of Azov as a direct extension of the occupation and further militarization of the Crimean peninsula. The representatives of the German delegation expressed condolences over the tragedy in Kerch. Particular attention was paid to the issue of the release of Ukrainian political prisoners,” the statement reads.

The issue of Russia’s implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project and the risks it poses to European security were also discussed.
