Merkel, Yatseniuk discuss political prisoners and peacekeepers in Donbas

German Chancellor Angela Merkel does not forget about Ukrainian political prisoners of the Kremlin and constantly raises this issue during conversations with Russian leadership.

Merkel said this during a meeting with Ukraine’s former prime minister Arseniy Yatseniuk in Berlin on Friday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

“Of course, we discussed the issue of political prisoners. The chancellor is doing everything to put pressure on Russia for the liberation of Ukrainians convicted by the regime of Vladimir Putin,” Yatseniuk told Ukrainian journalists.

According to him, the head of the German government is in constant negotiations with the Russian president on the whole range of issues, including political prisoners.

He assured that Merkel was aware of the situation with Oleg Sentsov.

During the conversation, which lasted more than an hour, the interlocutors raised the issue of a peacekeeping mission in Donbas. From January 1, 2019, Germany will become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and will have the right to vote.

As Ukrinform reported, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a visit to Kyiv on November 1.
