Germany, Russia will continue to discuss deployment of peacekeepers in Donbas

Germany and Russia will continue to discuss the possibility of deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said this at a briefing on Monday, confirming that this issue was raised during the talks of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with Russian President Vlamidir Putin on August 18, Ukrinform's correspondent in Germany reported.

"An intense discussion of this issue will continue," Seibert said.

He notes that there is the possibility of resolving the crisis with the help of the UN mission, and both sides agree with this. "Blue helmets" can help, he said.

On Saturday, August 18, Merkel stressed that the Minsk agreements remained the basis for the settlement of the situation. Merkel noted that a stable ceasefire in eastern Ukraine was still not achieved. She expressed hope that it would be possible "to make another attempt" to establish a ceasefire due to the beginning of the school year.
