More than 2,300 Ukrainian citizens convicted in Russian Federation over three years – Kyrylych

Over three years, more than 2,300 Ukrainian citizens have been detained and convicted in the Russian Federation for various types of crimes.

Deputy Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Consular Service Department Vasyl Kyrylych said this at a briefing, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

"More than 2,300 Ukrainian citizens have been detained and convicted in the Russian Federation," Kyrylych said.

Answering the journalists' clarifying question, he noted that the issue referred to the data for three years, and the types of crimes for which the Ukrainian citizens were convicted were "different."

In total, about 70 Ukrainian political prisoners are held in Russia and in occupied Crimea. Among them is Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment in a high-security colony for alleged espionage.
