Government to allocate UAH 100,000 to each family of Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has made a decision to allocate UAH 100,000 to the families of Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia.

The decision was adopted at a government meeting on Thursday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

The corresponding amendments were made to the procedure for using funds provided in the state budget to implement measures to protect and ensure the rights and interests of persons deprived of their personal freedom as a result of the armed actions of illegal armed groups and / or government bodies of the Russian Federation in certain territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where the Ukrainian state authorities temporarily do not exercise their powers, and the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, as well as support for the above-mentioned persons and their families.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said that each family of Ukrainian political prisoners would receive UAH 100,000. He said that these families had a lot of expenses they needed to cover.

About 70 Ukrainians are political prisoners in Russia and in the occupied Crimea. This list also includes Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony on fabricated charges of "espionage."
