Poroshenko: Issue of Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia discussed at meeting with G7, EU ambassadors

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, during a meeting with the ambassadors of the G7 countries and the European Union, noted the need to consolidate international efforts for the release of Ukrainian political prisoners illegally held in Russia.

"The issue of Ukrainian political prisoners and those who are illegally detained in Russia has become one of the key issues during my meeting with the ambassadors of the G7 countries and the EU. I noted the importance of consolidating international efforts for their speedy release," the president wrote on Twitter.

In addition, according to the website of the head of state, during the meeting, Poroshenko stressed that the Ukrainian issue is certainly a consolidating element in the foreign policy of the G7 states.

The president also said that the unity in support of Ukraine in terms of restoring territorial integrity and sanctions policy in connection with ongoing Russian aggression is very important.

As reported, according to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, at least 24 Ukrainians are political prisoners in Russia, and more than 40 - in the occupied Crimea. This list also includes Ukrinform journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison in Russia.
