Poroshenko, King Felipe VI discuss release of Ukrainian hostages and political prisoners in Russia

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has expressed hope for Spain’s assistance in the release of hostages and political prisoners illegally held by Russia.

The Ukrainian president said this during his meeting with King Philip VI of Spain on Monday, June 4, the press service of the head of state reported.

"During an official visit to the Kingdom of Spain, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met with King of Spain Felipe VI. Petro Poroshenko briefed the King of Spain on the development of the situation in the temporarily occupied Donbas and Crimea. The Ukrainian president expressed hope for the assistance of Spain in the release of Ukrainian hostages and political prisoners who are illegally detained in Russia," the statement reads.

Poroshenko highly appreciated the support of Spain for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state in counteracting Russian aggression. In turn, King Felipe VI noted the clear position of Ukraine in support of the unity of Spain.

The parties noted that over 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the Kingdom of Spain, friendship and mutual respect were among the main principles of the bilateral interaction.
