Ukrainian ambassador outlines main achievements in relations with Canada

The launch of the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement was one of the main achievements in the interstate relations for the last year.

Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada Andriy Shevchenko said this in a commentary to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Since August 1, the absolute majority of goods we sell to each other has been not liable to duties. This means that the conditions for producers both in Ukraine and in Canada have improved," Shevchenko recalled.

According to him, defense sector became the second main direction of bilateral relations.

"Last year we signed a defense agreement with Canada, and the UNIFIER training mission was also extended for two years. In addition, in December Canada added Ukraine to the Automatic Firearms Country Control List. It should also be recalled that on Ukraine’s Independence Day, the Canadian servicemen marched together with Ukrainian servicemen along the Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv. In brief, we reach a very high-quality brotherhood in arms, the importance of which cannot be overestimated amid the war," the ambassador said.

Canada also adopted the so-called Magnitsky Act and imposed sanctions on 30 Russian citizens suspected of violating human rights.

"It was indeed a very powerful year for Ukraine and Canada," Shevchenko summed up.
