EU leaders to confirm political decision on extension of sanctions against Russia on Thursday

On Thursday, the heads of states and governments of the member states of the European Union will make a political decision to extend sectoral economic restrictive measures against Russia imposed for encroachment on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

A senior official of the EU's governing body said this on the eve of the EU summit, which will be held in Brussels on December 14-15, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

"The leaders will hear speeches by French President Emmanuel Macron and Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel on the latest information on the implementation of the Minsk agreements. After this, a formal decision on extension of economic sanctions against Russia is expected to be adopted as soon as possible," the source said.

As expected, the Council of the European Union will adopt a legal act on extension of anti-Russian sanctions for the next six months after January 31, 2018.
