Recognition of Crimean Tatars' autonomy will help regain Crimea – Umerov

Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Ilmi Umerov is convinced that the official recognition of the autonomy of the Crimean Tatar people by Ukraine will provide additional arguments for the regain of Crimea.

He said this in an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda portal.

"The right to self-determination is the inalienable right of any people ... In Crimea, there should be at least the Crimean Tatars' autonomy," Umerov said.

He stressed that demands for autonomy do not mean separation from Ukraine.

In addition, Umerov has recalled that the status of Crimean Tatars as the indigenous people of Crimea and Ukraine was determined by a decree that is not a legislative act.

"Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a law on the status of the Crimean Tatar people as the indigenous people of Ukraine," the deputy head of the Mejlis said.

In his opinion, if the corresponding amendment to the Constitution is adopted, this will give Ukraine additional arguments for the regain of the occupied peninsula.
