Ukraine can become member of NATO after reforms are carried out – Stoltenberg

Ukraine and Georgia "sooner or later" can become member states of NATO, but today they need to focus on implementation of reforms.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated this during the 63rd annual session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Bucharest, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Ukraine and Georgia should focus on reforms. These reforms are important, regardless of whether they become members sooner or later, and regardless of what they think about membership," the NATO secretary general said.

He once again stresses that the Alliance supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Stoltenberg recalls that NATO provides Ukraine with extensive political and practical support within the framework of ten trust funds and a comprehensive cooperation program.

The secretary general approved the deepening of cooperation and the provision of assistance to Ukraine from some allies on bilateral principles.

Speaking about NATO's relations with Russia, the head of the Alliance noted the presence of many problematic issues.

Stoltenberg also says that NATO does not want to isolate Russia and needs a political dialogue with Moscow, which is based on the strength of the allies.
