A rally in support of one of the leaders of Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov was held in Toronto, Canada.

As an Ukrinform correspondent reports, the event was organized by the Canadian Association of Crimean Tatars.

Several dozen people came to express their support for the Ukrainian political prisoner near the building of the Provincial Parliament of Ontario. The rally was attended by activists of the local Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar communities, Consul General of Ukraine Andriy Veselovsky and Ontario parliament member from the ruling Liberal Party Yvan Baker.

The activists were holding Ukrainian, Canadian and Crimean Tatar flags and posters reading brief biographies of Ukrainian political prisoners who now are held behind bars in Russia.

As reported, on September 27, a Kremlin-controlled court in Simferopol sentenced Ilmi Umerov, the leader of the Crimean Tatar movement, to two years in a penal colony. Umerov was also banned from engaging in public activities for two years.
